announcement on the flexpart training, will be removed after June 10,2019

Training on dispersion modelling with FLEXPART 10: 1-3 July 2019

A 3-day training includes theory on and exercises with the Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART 10. The basic parameterizations, as well as specific ones for version 10 will be covered. Several exercises will illustrate the range of application of the model: volcanic eruptions, radionuclides, green-house gases, dust, etc. Depending on the interest of participants, the operational usage can also be covered.

This training is for both beginners as well as experienced uses that want to learn more about the physics of FLEXPART, the range of applications and/or the FLEXPART 10 specifications. However, a few basic prerequisites apply: Good English language skills, familiarity with basic Linux commands, some scientific background, and at least basic knowledge on atmospheric physics.

The training will be held at ZAMG (Vienna, Austria). The maximum number of participants is limited to 16. Following the training remotely (with a Skype link), will be possible for an unlimited number of people. Doing the exercises, and asking questions by Skype will be possible for a limited number of people (probably 5). The plan is to record all the sessions, and make them available on flexpart.eu. Costs for the training and lunch are covered by ZAMG, travel and accommodation costs have to be paid by the participants.

Please write before June 10 an email with your motivation, the relevance for your work/studies and your level of experience with FLEXPART to: marie.mulder@….

Welcome to the official FLEXPART web site

FLEXPART (“FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model”) is a Lagrangian transport and dispersion model suitable for the simulation of a large range of atmospheric transport processes. Applications range from the dispersion of radionuclides or air pollutants, over the establishment of flow climatologies, to the analysis of Earth’s water cycle. FLEXPART also produces output suitable for inverse determination of emission sources, e.g., of greenhouse gases or volcanic ash.

FLEXPART is a further development of its predecessor FLEXTRA (“FLEXible TRAjectory model”). Both FLEXTRA and FLEXPART have been open source models since the beginning and, over time have found a large international user community. In addition to the reference version of FLEXPART which is based on meteorological data from ECMWF or GFS, several branches of FLEXPART have been developed, which can be run with meteorological data from mesoscale models.

With the growing number of FLEXPART users, it has become important to provide a platform where the FLEXPART community can effectively exchange information, further develop the model together, and provide help to new users. The main FLEXPART developers have together chosen this platform for organizing their collaborative work and keeping track of the changes in FLEXPART. We would like to ask also all other users to share not only further developments of FLEXPART but also all other (e.g., post-processing or plotting) tools related to FLEXPART which may be useful for others.

This software development platform for FLEXPART, powered by trac, has been started in June 2012 and with FLEXPART version 9.0.
